Dyson air purifiers compared: TP09, HP07, HP10, PH04 – which one suits you?
TP09, HP07, HP10, PH04: the first time you look at Dyson air purifiers, it feels like staring at a secret code. The good news: you can crack it in two minutes. Two letters tell you what the machine does, and after that you'll know pretty well which one suits you.
At a glance
- TP means Purifier Cool: air purifier and fan. HP (Hot+Cool) can also heat, PH (Humidify+Cool) can also humidify.
- Formaldehyde in the name (TP09, PH04) means: a dedicated formaldehyde sensor and a filter that, according to Dyson, breaks it down.
- The HP10 has the higher number, but it's the simpler model: no app and fewer sensors than the HP07.
- According to Dyson, the same replacement filter fits all four.
- Available right now: PH04, HP07 and HP7A. You'll find everything we have from Dyson in the Dyson collection.

The Dyson code: what the letters tell you
All the purifiers in this comparison share three things: a filter made of HEPA and activated carbon, sensors that measure the air, and the familiar loop with no visible blades. Whatever comes on top is in the code:
- TP = Purifier Cool: air purifier and fan. Nothing more, but it does that properly.
- HP = Purifier Hot+Cool: air purifier, fan and fan heater in one.
- PH = Purifier Humidify+Cool: air purifier, fan and humidifier with its own water tank.
If there's an A after the number, as with the HP7A, it's an Autoreact version. According to Dyson, you control the HP7A with the remote only; there's no app for it.
2009
was the year Dyson launched the Air Multiplier, a fan with no visible blades. Toshiba had the idea back in 1981, but Dyson made it famous. The trick: a motor in the base draws in air and pushes it through a narrow slit in the loop.
What does “Formaldehyde” in the name mean?
Formaldehyde is a colourless gas. According to Germany's Federal Environment Agency, it mainly gets into the air at home from wood-based materials such as chipboard, from furniture, floor coverings and certain insulation materials.
According to Dyson, the models without “Formaldehyde” do filter particles and other substances, but not formaldehyde. That's why the TP09 and PH04 have two extras: a sensor that, according to Dyson, specifically detects formaldehyde, and a catalytic filter. According to Dyson, it continuously breaks formaldehyde down into water and CO₂. And the best part: Dyson says you never need to replace this filter.
What's missing is interesting too. The HP07 and TP07 are the siblings without a formaldehyde sensor or catalytic filter. The formaldehyde version of the HP07 is called the HP09, and that of the TP07 is the TP09.
HP07 or HP10: is the higher number the better one?
This is where many people get caught out. With phones, a higher number usually means “newer, with more inside”. Not necessarily with Dyson: the HP10's official name is “Purifier Hot+Cool Gen1”, and it's the simpler version.
- Controls: you control the HP07 with the remote, the MyDyson app or a voice assistant. The HP10 has no app. The only button on the machine is the power button; everything else is done with the remote.
- Sensors: the HP07 shows you particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂). The HP10 only measures particulate matter, i.e. PM2.5 and PM10.
- In common: both purify, heat and cool, oscillate up to 350 degrees and use the same filter.
In return, the HP10 has a display with a small 24-hour graph. So you can see how the air in the room is changing, even without your phone.

All four side by side
| Feature | TP09 | HP07 | HP10 | PH04 |

On filtration: according to Dyson, the HEPA H13 filter captures 99.95% of particles down to 0.1 microns, measured to the filter standard EN 1822. That's a lab figure for the filter, not a promise for every room.
And the PH04? With a full 5-litre tank, it goes a long way:
36
hours: that's how long the PH04 can humidify on one tank, according to Dyson, and it's the maximum. In Auto mode it regulates the humidity itself and, according to Dyson, keeps it at a comfortable level.
And what about the TP07, HP09 and HP7A?
These three names often turn up alongside. Here's where they fit in:
- TP07: the TP09 without the formaldehyde sensor and catalytic filter.
- HP09: the HP07 with a formaldehyde sensor and catalytic filter.
- HP7A: the Purifier Hot+Cool Autoreact. It purifies, heats and cools, but according to Dyson it has no app. In our shop it's listed as the HP07A.
Which type are you?
- You're sweltering in a top-floor flat: what you mainly need is the fan. Go for the TP09, or the PH04 if you also want to humidify in winter.
- Your study is cold in winter: an HP is your all-year machine. A fan in summer, a fan heater in winter, and purifying all the time. With app: the HP07; without app: the HP10 or HP7A.
- The air from your heating feels too dry: then the PH04 is your type. It's the only one in this comparison that humidifies. It can't heat.
- You want to know what's in the air: in this comparison, only the TP09 and PH04 show formaldehyde. All four measure particulate matter.
- You're not into apps: the HP10 or HP7A. Everything runs via the remote.
Tip for hot days: air your home in the morning and evening, when it's cooler outside. According to TU Wien, a fan works particularly well combined with this. During the day, blinds or curtains keep the sun out, as Germany's Federal Environment Agency advises.
The filter: what goes in and when
Good news for anyone who doesn't like a jungle of filters:
1
filter for all four: according to Dyson, the combined HEPA and activated carbon filter with part number 965432-01 fits the TP09, HP07, HP10 and PH04. The TP07, HP09 and HP7A take it too.
- Replacement: according to Dyson, the filter lasts around 12 months, based on 12 hours of use a day. The machine tells you when it's time, and so does the app on the TP09, HP07 and PH04.
- Replace it sooner: with pets or heavily polluted air, the filter can fill up faster, according to Dyson.
- Catalytic filter: on the TP09 and PH04 it stays in. According to Dyson, you never need to replace it.
- Extra on the PH04: for humidifying, it has an evaporator. According to Dyson, once a month you start a deep clean cycle at the touch of a button, which removes limescale from the water system.
Tip: does your purifier suddenly smell musty? Then it's often time for a new filter. According to Dyson, filters clog up over time, and that can cause unpleasant smells.

Frequently asked questions
Which Dyson air purifier is the best?
There's no single best one; it depends on your room. The PH04 has the most functions without heating: purifying, fan, humidifying and formaldehyde. If you need warmth, go for an HP: the HP07 with app or the HP10 without. If purifying and a fan with a formaldehyde sensor are enough for you, the TP09 is a good fit.
Can an air purifier cool as well?
A Dyson is also a fan. The draught cools your skin, but it doesn't lower the temperature in the room. That's true of every fan, as TU Wien and Germany's Federal Environment Agency also explain. For genuinely cooler room air you need air conditioning.
How long should an air purifier run each day?
Dyson doesn't give a fixed number of hours. The easiest option is Auto mode: the sensors measure continuously and turn the speed up or down by themselves. Dyson bases the filter life of around 12 months on 12 hours of use a day.
Which air purifier is best for odours?
According to Dyson, the activated carbon in the filter takes care of gases and odours, and all four models have it. We haven't found a comparison of which model removes odours best. If the machine itself smells musty, a new filter is usually due.
What's the difference between the HP07 and HP10?
Both purify, heat and cool. The HP07 has the MyDyson app and shows more readings (particulate matter, VOCs, NO₂). The HP10 (Gen1) has no app, only measures particulate matter and is controlled entirely with the remote.
Which filter fits the TP09 and PH04?
According to Dyson, the combined HEPA and activated carbon filter 965432-01. It also fits the HP07 and HP10. According to Dyson, you never need to replace the catalytic formaldehyde filter in the TP09 and PH04.
